A delegation of Aldine Independent School District (AISD) leaders met with key legislators, directors, and consultants in the State Capitol this past week to learn about legislation affecting public education and to advocate for priorities that are important to AISD students, parents and teachers.
Participants included Aldine ISD Board Trustees Steve Mead, Connie Esparza, Dr. Kimberley Booker, Paul Shanklin, Rose Avalos, and Dr. Viola M. García. Aldine ISD Superintendent of Schools LaTonya M. Goffney and Deputy Superintendent Selina Chapa.
Assistant Assistant Superintendent and General Counsel M. Kaye DeWalt, Superintendent of Finance Tamika Alford-Stephens, Assistant Superintendent of Community and Governmental Relations Abel Garza, Chief Communications Officer Sheleah D. Reed; Executive Director of Assessment, Accountability and School Improvement Dawn Ayers-Rodríguez, and Director of Guidance, Counseling and At-Risk Students Charlotte J. Davis also comprised the group from AISD.
The group made several visits that also included meeting with Representative Armando Walle, Senator John Whitemire, Representative Jarvis Johnson, Representative Harold Dutton Jr., Senator Carol Alvarado, Representative Valoree Swanson, and Representative Dan Huberty.
Discussion topics included school funding, mental health, special education, early education and more. AISD representatives also used the occasion to highlight the District’s strengths, such as its balanced budget, and the progress that it is making in multiple areas and more.
“We shared information about our District, which helps our legislators make better informed decisions,” Dr. Goffney said. “We also shed light on our story, the wonderful kids that we have, and how we are working tto prepare them for their future.
“The legislators were impressed and wanted additional information on how we are implementing changes in our District.”
