Aldine ISD’s Dyslexia Department is recognizing National Dyslexia Awareness Month in October. The Dyslexia Department will host the free informative event at the Aldine ISD M.B. “Sonny” Donaldson Child Nutrition Center (1802 Aldine Bender • Houston, TX 77032) on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The event is part of the District’s effort to empower parents and staff. The session will go over the basics of dyslexia. This language processing disorder can hinder reading, writing, spelling and sometimes even speaking. Other topics covered at the session will include support, accommodations, technology, English language learners, library resources, visual stress/Irlen Syndrome, and the learning disability that affects writing known as dysgraphia. Dr. Kimberly Sinclair (Click to go to Dyslexia Department webpages.) stated she would also share new tools that aid dyslexic students at home and school. Sinclair serves as the dyslexia program director. She encourages parents, students, teachers and dyslexia specialists to attend the session.
“Dyslexia is a complex, lifelong learning disorder,” said Sinclair. “It can be frustrating for parents to know how best to support their child with dyslexia. Schools have a responsibility in ensuring children learn to read and write and are able to access the curriculum. “However, parents have an important role too. The best outcomes result when parents, teachers and dyslexia specialists coordinate support for children with dyslexia.”
Sinclair shared that about 20 percent of U.S. students have dyslexia but most don’t know it. She added that dyslexia might manifest itself differently for speakers of different languages. “Aldine ISD and its campuses have a great program to support our students with dyslexia,” said Sinclair. “Every student is different, and every student responds differently to dyslexia therapy. We work with each student to find the therapy and techniques that work best for each child. “Everyone that attends will find the event informative and useful.”
