The spring 2018 issue of National Art Education Association (NAEA) Advisory, delves into the experiences of four art educators, including Wauna Johnson from Aldine ISD.
The article explores innovative ways that art teachers have developed resources despite funding limitations.
Johnson uses free and inexpensive apps like Chatterpix Kids by Duck Duck Moose and Green Screen by Do Ink. For a class project, she had her students draw on paper their future selves (aka self-portraits). The students photographed their completed drawings and uploaded them to Chatterpix Kids. With a swipe of their finger, students drew a mouth on their images. There is one button to press to record, and the mouth then animates with the recording. Johnson’ students shared what they want to be when they grow up.
Green Screen makes it easy to create videos and photos. The user-friendly app enables students to tell a story, explain an idea, and express themselves in creative and unique ways. The “green screen” effect is used in the movies to make it look like the actors have landed on an alien planet, and it’s used on TV to make it look like the local news announcer is standing in front of a weather map. The green screen effect works by combining images from multiple sources into a single video.
For a project, Johnson had students use the video platform to share and discuss their artworks. Students had to plan, write, record and critique their own artistic outcomes.
“Incorporating technology into art is a practical, exciting way of teaching art on a budget,” Johnson said.
Dr. Michaelann Kelley is thrilled for Johnson. Kelley is director of fine arts. She is an ardent proponent of technology use in the arts. She also endorses art as a cross-curricular tool to reach and engage all learners.
“If used effectively, technology engages students’ artistic creativity,” Kelley said. “Technology can increase students‘ participation to explore their own creative passions.”
NAEA Advisory is a short digital resource whose topics translate research and theory into practice for the K-12 NAEA member, and are often written by K-12 teachers.
