Nimitz High School students are grateful to their new friends at West Genesee High School in Albany. Their New York peers raised funds to help students hit by Hurricane Harvey.
AdoptAClassroom.org helps teachers purchase school supplies for their students. The nonprofit allows people to donate directly to a teacher.
After the storm, AdoptAClassroom set up the Hurricane Harvey Classroom Relief Fund. The nonprofit recognized teachers as first responders in helping in their students who lost their homes and/or possessions. The money collected helps teachers buy school supplies needed for learning.
Teacher Valaniecia Coleman applied to AdoptAClassroom.org to help her students. Coleman teaches professional communications. The site matched English teacher Rebecca DeCesare at West Genesee HS with Coleman.
DeCesare worked with her school’s Student Council. Within a month, more than 100 West Genesee students raised $500.
A few of Coleman’s students got to meet their West Genesee HS peers via a teleconference.
