Aldine ISD’s best source of pride stems from giving students opportunities to showcase their creative talents as they expand their learning.
The Name That Book (NTB) contest, coordinated by the AISD Department of Library Services, serves to familiarize students with classic literature as well as contemporary award-winning books, representing a variety of genres. The districtwide competition is held in the spring.
Each year, K-12 students read 30 books during the school year prior to the District’s Name That Book reading competition. The contest challenges kids who read the books to compete against their peers from other schools. The games put students’ knowledge of those books to the test.
Library Services decided to give AISD students more ownership of the competition. The department decided to sponsor a logo contest this spring for NTB. Campus information literacy specialists (ILSs) collaborated with the visual art teachers to promote the contest. They taught students about logos and branding.
Thirty-five students took part. They represented Aldine Middle School, Carmichael Elementary, Carter Academy, Cypresswood Elementary, Dunn Elementary, Houston Academy, Jones Elementary, Nimitz Ninth Grade and Reed Academy.
While judging was difficult, the panel named Kia Robertson from Nimitz Ninth Grade School as the winner. Kia’s design will be used in promotional materials for District’s annual NTB competition. Fernándo Rey from Jones Elementary School and Kimberly Olmos from Carmichael Elementary School earned Honorable Mention awards.
