Several Aldine ISD campuses took part in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® Campaign this fall. The national campaign celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® generates public support for high-quality early learning. Each year, millions of children and adults take part in the large shared reading experience.
This year, students read Not Norman: A Goldfish Story. The book is written by Kelly Bennett and illustrated by Noah Z. Jones. It is a sweet story about the pitfalls of making snap judgments about pets — or people. Norman the goldfish isn’t what this little boy had in mind. He wanted a different kind of pet. He wanted one that could run and catch, or chase string and climb trees. He wanted a soft furry pet to sleep on his bed at night. Definitely not Norman. But when he tries to trade Norman for a “good pet,” things don’t go as he planned. Could it be that Norman is a better pet than he thought? This is a fishy tale about finding the good in something you didn’t know you wanted.
According to Cindy Buchanan, information literacy specialists at participating AISD schools helped coordinate campus events. Buchanan is the program director of library media services. Some classes listened to the story while others took part in reading the book together. Some students also drew pictures of Norman the fish. AISD schools took part in 2014.
“This is a great campaign,” said Buchanan. “Jumpstart advocates early reading to help children thrive in school and life. This is something we support in Aldine schools.”
