Miguel González from Harris Academy won the district spelling bee earlier this spring. In a field of 48 spellers, students fell to words like “dromedary” and “prescient.” But Miguel proved he was the Spelling Bee Champion. He went head-to-head with competitors for 13 rounds without misspelling a word.
Miguel will advance to the Houston Public Media 2015 Regional Spelling Bee. It will take place at Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting on March 28.
The Houston Public Media Spelling Bee is the nation’s third largest local spelling bee. Spellers from 1,000 schools in 42 counties will be competing.
Innetta Carter is proud of Miguel. She serves as principal at the campus.
“Everyone at the school is proud of Miguel,” Carter said. “And we wish him well at the regional spelling bee event.“
The HoustonPBS regional competition is the qualifying bee for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The national event will take place at the end of May in Washington, D.C.
Good luck Miguel!
