Twenty-six elementary students in Aldine ISD took part in the First Tee National School Program Champions challenge at Redstone Golf Club on March 23.
The Challenge, presented by Children’s Memorial Herman Hospital, is a skills event comprised of more than 300 fourth-grade students from 14 Houston-area school districts. Two students from each of the participating elementary schools earned a spot to compete in the fun-filled competition that was held the Saturday before the Shell Houston Open.
Thirteen AISD elementary schools took part in the event. Those schools were: Black Elementary, Bussey Elementary, Carmichael Elementary, Carter Academy, Dunn Elementary, Gray Elementary, Harris Academy, Johnson Elementary, Jones Elementary, Magrill Elementary, Oleson Elementary, Orange Grove Elementary and Stephens Elementary.
The National School Program curriculum is based on nationwide physical education standards and emphasizes character building through an introduction to golf and the First Tee Nine Core Values and the First Tee Nine Healthy Habits. Through its fundraising efforts, the Houston Golf Association (HGA) has helped provide equipment, curriculum and physical educator training in more than 180 elementary schools in the Houston area. More than 92,000 students participate in the First Tee National School Program during the school year in the Greater Houston community.
