Chevron selected Aldine ISD as one of only three Houston-area school districts to participate in the JASON Project. Chevron presented the school district a $254,631 check that will allow the district’s middle school students to participate in the program.
The JASON Project is an award-winning program that connects students and teachers with real scientific exploration and discovery. They will be able to connect virtually and physically with scientists and researchers who will provide mentored, authentic and enriching science learning experiences.
The check presentation was made during the June 12 Board of Education meeting. On hand representing Chevron, and to make the check presentation, were Joni Baird and Mike Hawes. Accepting on behalf of Aldine ISD were Dr. Wanda Bamberg, AISD superintendent of schools; Rick Ogden, AISD board president; Xandra Williams-Earlie, AISD program director of secondary science, and Stacey Smith, AISD program director of resource development.
“We did a lot of research before we decided to make this contribution and which school districts (to select). We were looking for diversity, a school board that could really make fabulous things happen, and for leadership with a superintendent. We asked around. We researched. And this is the district we wanted to participate with,”
said Baird, who serves as Chevron’s Houston public and government relations representative. “We selected two other districts as well, but the competition was fierce and we were very serious about wanting to have programs that we knew would succeed and where the kids in the district would have a great experience.”
Twenty-one teachers will be trained as “coaches” to implement the program districtwide. The experience will culminate with one teacher and one student being selected for a hands-on experience aboard the exploration vessel Nautilus. Dr. Robert Ballard, a National Geographic explorer and discoverer of the Titanic and the Bismarck, conceived the JASON Project in 1989.
